Sand Point Lighthouse FAQs
The Sand Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1867 by the National Lighthouse Service.
It featured a rectangular, story-and-a-half building with an attached brick tower and a cast iron lantern room, which housed a fourth order Fresnel lens.
The light served as a fixed red signal that started operating on May 13, 1868. The light still helps ships navigate away from Sand Point and the nearby sand reef.
It operated continuously from 1868 until 1939, except for a brief period in 1886 due to damage from a fire.
After 1939, the US Coast Guard took over and made significant alterations to the building. Turning it into a residence for the Officer-in-Charge of the station and moving the navigational light offshore to a new location.
